Xishuangbanna is a district located in the south of the Chinese province of Yunnan, close to Burma and Laos. Its population is composed of several national minorities, among which Dai is the most important one. This area looks more like south east Asia than China, and it is more closely linked to Laos and Thailand than to the rest of China. This particularity concerns the population itself as well as traditional housing or food. Xishuangbanna is mostly composed of tropical forest and the main cities and villages are located next to the Mekong river.
