Macao used to be a portuguese colony during nearly five centuries before it was given back to China on december 20, 1999. Nowadays, it is probably the most european city in China and some parts of the territory have a strong mediterranean taste. Macao is also well-known for its casinos attracting gamblers from whole China, as this activity is forbidden in mainland.
