CANTON ( GUANGZHOU )

Canton, capital city of Guangdong province, is the biggest city in southern China, very close to its rich and powerful neighbour, Hong Kong. This city has been a paradise for businessmen for long, as well as nowadays. During XIXth century, Canton was the main entrance gate for foreigners in China. Today, the city is divided between political faith to Beijing and cultural and economic links with Hong Kong. It is one of the cities where mandarin language meets the most important resistance. The nicest place of the city is definitely Shamian Island, on the Pearls River, and its beautiful colonial architecture.
